Beginner’s Guide to Indoor Herb Garden Essentials

Beginner’s Guide to Indoor Herb Garden Essentials

We are in the perfect season to start putting together crops outdoors and creating helpful indoor herb gardens.  Most people tend to wait until things start getting warmer and everything starts blooming before planning a garden, but having an indoor herb garden lets you set it up anytime of the year and enjoy it throughout any season, including winter. The best part about it? You don't have to spend a lot of money on high-tech gadgets to make sure that your indoor herb garden grows efficiently and receives enough light. Having an indoor garden has its many benefits, including cooking, home remedies, and aromatherapy. Don't let the inconvenience of a false spring prevent you from starting your very own home herb garden. Even if you're busy with everyday life, Psync Camera Genie S is there to monitor the growth and progress of your hard work and let you know if they are being fruitful.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Garden

One of the biggest detriments to having an outdoor garden is its complexity. You need to have the appropriate garden beds with the different layers of soil and dirt. According to Joe Lamp’l, some of the types of things you need to consider for an outdoor garden bed are 50% mineral particles,  25% water, 25% air, and 5% organic matter. Organic matter includes compost and improves the soil's structure, water retention, and nutrient availability. You also have to maintain a certain pH in the dirt for plants to grow successfully. You have to commit a lot of time and manual labor to make sure your garden will produce. Unfortunately, even though you commit an investment of time into your outdoor garden, it could easily be destroyed by a neighborhood cat or an invasion of bugs.

On the flipside, setting up an indoor herb garden is much less manual labor, has less supply cost, doesn't need to have a huge garden bed, and you can keep all your herbs inside where they will not be at risk of neighborhood animals or bugs. Herbs that you can start with are basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, chives, cilantro, mint, thyme, tarragon, sage, dill, lemon, lemongrass, and lavender. Each of these herbs has its nuanced benefits. For example, lavender can be used for aromatherapy as it has been known to help people sleep. Mint can help stuffy noses. The biggest staples in a herb garden are basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, and chives. These can be used in a multitude of dishes, enhancing their flavors and making them delicious staples to have at any given point in time. All you really need to begin your indoor herb garden is a sunny windowsill. Some of the things you'll need to start are terra-cotta pots or rectangular planters. According to Amanda Schiffer from Herbs at Home, "With just a little care, you can enjoy the freshness and flavor of homegrown herbs, all year round.”

Last but not least, the most affordable investment that you can make towards having a successful indoor herb garden is buying a Psync Camera Genie S. This versatile little camera can be set up anywhere; it's small, compact, and sleek, making it the perfect home accessory. Additionally, since Genie has built-in local storage, it can record and save up to 42 days of video on the 64 GB version. This would allow you to monitor and track the growth, movement, and development of your herb garden. You can watch the videos with the time-lapse option and admire your little garden anytime.

Choose Your Ideal Setup

Indoor herb gardens come in a variety of flavors. We recommend going with the indoor option since the outdoor options are much more convoluted and complex. With that being said, some of the best options for indoor gardens are:

  • Freestanding Vertical Gardens
  • Stable Planter Gardens
  • Hydroponic Indoor Garden
  • Farmhouse Herb Planter Set
  • Indoor Herb Grow Kit
  • Balcony Railing Herb Garden
  • Multi-Tiered Hanging Planters
  • Windowsill Grow Kit

Love and Renovations mentions that you don’t need to build anything to get your garden started: "Creating a cute kitchen herb garden or a backyard herb garden is simple, and it doesn’t require power tools or anything fancy. It’s so nice to have fresh herbs on hand for salads, adding flavor to your dishes, and of course, just to add some beautiful foliage!

If you don't want to begin completely from scratch, you can find a variety of different starter kits by running a quick Google search. These kits include everything you need, including seeds! If you want to go the easier route and begin your garden with starters, we highly recommend going to your local nursery or hardware store to find herbs that have already started to sprout.

Below is a bare minimum of what you'll need to start:

  •  Terra-cotta pot or planter
  •  Soil and compost, like Miracle Grow
  •  Gardening gloves
  •  Simple garden tools
  •  Area near a window
  •  Seeds or starters
  •  Small watering can

Once you have that, you would start by filling the terra-cotta pots with dirt and soil, making sure you leave enough space at the top of the pot for the seedling or starter plant. Make sure you place them in an area that receives enough light, but if you want a little extra light or you don't have an area that is bright enough, Psync Camera Genie S can provide additional benefits to your baby herbs.  LED lights are highly beneficial to developing plants, giving them a boost that they may not receive from the sun. This is especially important since an indoor or garden has a limited amount of light exposure they can receive.

Let Genie Light Your Garden

Set your worries aside and get ready to start your perfect indoor garden! It's not as intimidating as it sounds, and Psync Camera Genie S is there to help you along the way.  We recommend not worrying about setting up an extravagant outdoor garden and just concentrating on something simple. All you need is a handful of tools and supplies, and you can get started, regardless of the season. Additionally, if you have spaces in your home that you think could accommodate an indoor herb garden but you feel like it's lacking sun, Genie S can help with its powerful LED lights. It can also record for up to 42 days continuously with the 64 GB version. Genie S is your companion on your journey to a successful and fruitful indoor herb garden.
